What is Aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy massage is massage therapy but using highly concentrated plant oils, called essential oils which are added to carrier massage oils or lotions. Aromatherapy has a history dating back thousands of years and enhances well-being and stimulates and harmonises a healthy physical, mental and emotional state.  The nostrils are attached to a part of the brain called the limbic system. The limbic system controls emotions and influences the nervous system and hormones. When you inhale essential oil molecules, messages are transmitted to the limbic system and affect heart rate, stress level, blood pressure, breathing, memory, digestion, and the immune system. Essential oils are also believed to be absorbed through the skin. Each essential oil has different healing properties, for example some calm while others energize.

Aromatherapy massage is particularly suited to conditions involving stress or improving emotionally-related conditions. After the consultation a typical Aromatherapy massage will take 60 mins. The client will lie on a massage couch/table wearing their underwear covered by a towel & blanket. The therapist will uncover only the part of the body they are working on to maintain dignity at all times, one or more essential oils will then be selected based on what the client likes or requires, these are 'blended' with the carrier massage oil or lotion to be used for the massage. After the massage, the massage therapist may suggest a blend to be used at home in between massage treatments.
