What is Sports Massage?

Sports Massage includes pre-event, post-event, maintenance and rehabilitation techniques that promote greater athletic endurance and performance, reduced chances of injury and faster healing.  This type of massage is effective for people with injuries, chronic pain or restricted range of motion. It is also a good preventative against injury.

Sports Massage uses a variety of advanced techniques including classic massage strokes, cross-fibre friction, soft tissue release, muscle energy technique, neuro muscular technique and soft tissue mobilization. The massage works deep to eliminate toxins embedded in muscle fibres, remove adhesions, and minimize scar tissue build up. Muscle lengthening techniques help to restore a range of motion and overall flexibility and this massage also leads to improved circulation which aids better cell nutrition, greater elasticity of muscle fibre, and reduced recovery time.

The overall aim of this course is to enrich knowledge & understanding of advanced anatomical, physiological and pathological principles relevant to sports massage and enhance knowledge & understanding of muscular- skeletal injuries and conditions. This course will provide candidates with advanced palpation skills and those needed to analyse posture and range of movement. It will also provide a range of advanced skills and massage techniques to prevent and manage injuries and prepare for and apply a range of sports massage techniques to deliver massage in a range of environments. Candidates will learn to critically evaluate massage strategies and methods to inform on future treatments.

Who will benefit from this course?

It is suitable for:

  • those who work with professional or amateur athletes or chronic pain clients independently,
  • osteopaths, physiotherapists, sports therapists, sports massage practitioners,
  • those who work in sport and active leisure industry,
  • massage therapists who wish to learn skills for treating clients with injuries or restricted range of motion. The skills learned can therefore be combined with existing therapies to widen scope of treatment and also treating new types of clients.
